Recently Fable the company behind the critically acclaimed VR experiences Lost, Henry and Wolves in the walls starring Lucy pivoted to a 'virtual beings' company.

Why? you may ask, well it is thought that the next big thing is the combination of immersive story telling and AI. For example Fable is working on a version of Lucy where you can have a conversation with her. The idea is that interaction with a virtual being will bring a story more to life and will help to build a 2-way emotional relationship with the virtual being.

Other examples are Mica from Magic Leap , Lil Miquela from Brud and Janky from Superplastic. These are new kind of characters, they are persistent virtual beings which could be accessed on different media, instagram, VR, AR, iPad, IPhone.

Virtual beings could well be the future of entertainment and the 'next thing' after video. Imagine having personal conversations with your favourite character!;

Is this the future? What do you think? I think it could be an harmless passtime, it could be a usefull agent for business and education. As a downside it could reduce interactions with real people. And making some steps in the future: the virtual beings could capture a lot of attention , compare this to the 'phone addiction' we already see happening now where people or family members are sometimes completely absorbed in their virtual interactions - for instance on the smartphone using social media or playing games. One can also imagine virtual beings being optimized for pleasant interaction skills like personality, sense of humor, intelligence , or looks - these virtual beings will compete on interestingness with real human beings in a sense...

But let us first focus on the benefits, entertaining and positive applications :)
